October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. Over the last few years I’ve had several friends and family members affected by miscarriage and infant loss. While it is a devastating situation, it is far more common than most people think.
If you’re reading my blog, then you probably already know that I love to crochet. One day I decided to search the internet for nonprofit groups that needed donations of crocheted items. I was looking for some sort of organization that I could make simple things like hats or blankets to donate to people in need. I stumbled upon Project Robby.
Project Robby provides “bereavement sets” (a crocheted hat, blanket, and angel wings) to parents that have suffered the loss of a baby. They believe that every baby is precious no matter how short the pregnancy or the time here on Earth. I’ve been following this organization for a long time now, and I can’t believe how large it has grown. Project Robby started in 2014 as a fundraising attempt to donate 50 tiny hats and 50 tiny blankets to the hospital where the founder’s baby boy was born and sadly passed away. Today, they are sending out an average of 100 sets each week to families and hospitals all across America.
A few weeks ago, they announced on their Facebook page that they are hosting an Angel Wing Drive in honor of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. Their goal is to collect 600 sets of crocheted angel wings between October 1st and October 31st. They have several patterns to choose from on their website (projectrobby.com/angel-wing-patterns), and I have created my own pattern below. If you know how to crochet, I urge you to join me in helping Project Robby meet their goal. Don’t know how to crochet? Check out their Amazon Wish List for other needed items to donate, or consider making a monetary donation to help with their mailing expenses.
